Nat Geo Nights: Sharing stories from the field

On July 18, the five of us Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling fellows came home from all over the world—Ireland, Romania, Mozambique, Panama and Singapore—to share stories from our field research during National Geographic Society’s “Nat Geo Nights” series. I had the wonderful opportunity to share with more than 300 people about Irish bogs and the characters I’ve met during my research.

It was a chance to distill a year’s research into a 15 minute message. Creating the talk took a willingness to leave a lot of things out and ultimately was a great opportunity to refine a message and practice sharing it concisely and with photos and audio to spice things up. It was a fun evening and I was happy to have several questions from people wanting to know even more about Irish bogs and their soil. Plus, it is always a good day when someone tells me: I’ll never think about soil the same way again. Mission accomplished.
